why is the popular vote important in a presidential election?

Strictly speaking, it’s not important at all. Only the Electoral College matters. However, you could argue that a President who wins the popular vote decisively has more of a mandate to pass his or her agenda. On the other hand, if a President loses the popular vote or just barely wins it, he or she may not be seen as completely legitimate (see George Bush, 2000).

Excerpts from Barack Obama’s 2008 Presidential Election Night acceptance speech:

“I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to — it belongs to you. It belongs to you.

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn’t start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington — it began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston.

It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation’s apathy. It grew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on the doors of perfect strangers.

You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead.
This victory alone is not the change we seek — it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It cannot happen without you –without a new spirit of service, without a new spirit of sacrifice. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime.

There jobs to be created, new schools to build, and threats to meet –alliances to repair. The road ahead will be long, the climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term, but America I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you we as a people we’ll get there. America we have come so far we have seen so much but there’s so much more to do.”

The American economy has spun into an economic meltdown, including the largest drop in GDP growth since 1980. The constant blow to the nation’s consumers has drastically reduced spending power, causing depression worries.  A widespread drop in housing prices, dips in the stock markets and insolvency by highly trusted banks have left people with no other option but to stop spending and start saving.

S&P/Case-Shiller statistics revealed that house prices in 20 big cities fell at the annual rate of 16.6%. There has also been a rise in the unemployment rate (6.1%) and is expected to move upwards further. Bloomberg forecasts that there may be another 0.2% increase in the last one month bringing the final statistics to 175,000 jobs lost. Reliable bank and credit sources have also lost shape and credit levels had already fallen to 3.7% in August.  Around the world, the Japanese and European economies are nearing recession and the global credit crunch has affected many more.

Tomorrow’s US presidential election will help decide the policies that will be in force for the next few years. Cutting taxes can leave extra cash, and credible plans for long-term fiscal health need to be put in place. Obama’s plan to put $45 billion in reserve and investing $75 billion has got him 82% support from one of the leading online discussion network, Minekey. His plans to introduce a tax credit of up to $500 per person and many more such similar benefits may work well for the economy. Economic policies that act as stimulus to the present depressing economic status can act as a catalyst in raising current standards.

Going by the trend set by people the world over, at the popular discussion network Minekey, Obama’s policies are well received and appreciated. Opinion polls conducted by Readers Digest also shows a mixed blend of nationals voting for Obama’s strong economical and financial policy proposals. A reality check on what is actually being discussed and agreed upon can be found at many of the online election sites, that have contributed to creating awareness about the current economic and political scenario. Strong recommendations on where to invest in the coming months and how well taxes can be cut down can be got from these discussion boards. They have not only generated support for the candidates, but also helped users to vote, discuss and express freely their opinions on the probable effects of these policy proposals.

What happens after November 4th, 2008 is yet to be seen. What has happened so far may go for the better or worse after the introduction of new policies. The American economy and the election’s outcome can make a huge difference in global markets. While at home, jobs can be restored and houses can be saved, markets worldwide can manage to cross over again, if this consistent slump down can be slowed down and stopped eventually. The trend may continue up to the first quarter of 2009, after which there can be seen some vital signs of improvement. Policies implemented after elections may also take its own time to restore economic normalcy and stabilization. Meanwhile, those who have managed to save and do not use credit are those who may be able to sustain the economic depression.

Inspired by this historic election season that has seen the first viable black presidential candidate and a new sense of hope throughout the nation, Chicago-based gospel balladeer Desmond Pringle has released a new single “Hope is Born” as a free mp3 download.

The Gospel balladeer belts out lines from the heart & mind, reflecting not only the hope of the American people, but also the entire world. “So many weary years, silent tears. Now we give up to a great new time of the year… The ceiling has been shattered, millions of pieces have been scattered…” Whomever The people choose to lead them, Desmond sees hope as already being bought to the country: “we’ve already won, regardless of the outcome.” After all, “hope is born, not only in the White House, but in my house.”

Coinciding with the release of the single, Desmond has launched a new blog calling for people to embrace the power of hope to affect their own realities. The blog will serve as a launchpad for people of all stripes to spread the message of hope born out of this election season and beyond.

“The message is simple: that anything is possible to the one who believes! The assignment is to get the message out to as many people as possible. We are intentional about getting the message downloaded in hearts and encoded in minds. Embracing the premise that, ‘As a man thinketh in his heart so is he’, we are committed to filling the earth with a lot of HOPEFUL people. Desperate days demand us to actively participate rather than passively spectate in life!”

Desmond Pringle is a passionate vocalist with a unique brand of balladry – and one of the most talented songwriter/producers in gospel music today. Whether delivering his signature-smooth ballads, thought provoking lyrics or energetic choir songs, Desmond has already taken his place among the ranks of great gospel artists of his generation.

Desmond’s journey into professional music began in the lead role of the hit gospel musical “A Good Man Is Hard To Find”. His portrayal received an NAACP Image Award nomination. The native South Carolinian then relocated to Chicago in 1993 to further develop his musical prowess. His work as a singer/songwriter gained him contributions to award-winning artists including Yolanda Adams, Bishop T. D. Jakes, R. Kelly and The Thompson Community Singers. Add to that– stellar performances at the Stockholm Gospel Festival and the award as the Best Male Vocalist by the African American Religious Connection. In 1998 his independent release “Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs” grabbed the attention of Chicago radio and led to a deal with Tommy Boy Gospel. “Loyalty” attracted a broad-base, diverse, multicultural audience, and Desmond’s first class musical performances won the enthusiastic respect of music lovers and accolades of industry professionals alike.

“Gospel music is a very simple – but powerful vehicle that is able to change hearts”, says Desmond. “Sharing my ministry and music with integrity is the most important thing in my life.”

0 NBC News Decision 1980 Reagan WinsNBC news projects at about 8:15 PM that Ronald Reagan is elected President. The early NBC projections sparked controversies inside and outside the media. A mayor protested that it “effectively ended the races even before the polls in her area are closed.” A CBS commentator called it “small beer.” ABC was caught under pressure and Walter Cronkite was forced to explain to viewers what was happening. Also, this was the first time that exit polls were used by a network as the sole basis for projecting a winner for a state.

Later on, David Brinkley will call it a “suburban swimming pool,” while others call it “Lake Reagan.” And of course, NBC News team was more than happy to have that win as the earliest network to announce a winner at the time they are facing problems with Chancellor being defeated by Reynolds and Cronkite.

Also, America saw three generations of NBC anchormen. David Brinkley of Huntley-Brinkley Report fame, his successor (and sometimes co-anchor) John Chancellor, and in turn Chancellor’s successor Tom Brokaw (who was then announcing the Today show).

Alaskan governor Sarah Palin has attracted more than her share of attention as the Republican Presidential candidate in the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election. Unfortunately, she has invited criticism for most things she has done. Perhaps this is because of some unfortunate planetary influences in her astrological chart currently going on in the sky.

Sarah Palin was born in Sandpoint, Idaho on February 11th, 1964. Palin’s astrological chart reveals that she is an influential individual, whether that influence is for better or worse. Her youthful appearance is the result of being a forward thinking Aquarius and her Leo rising gives her a lot of charisma. The television cameras can’t seem to take their lenses off her.

A number of planets in Aquarius might have been the cause of Sarah Palin’s recent televised gaffes. Still, despite Palin’s perceived shallowness, Aquarians are not usually tyrants. They are usually intelligent deep thinkers that have a vision even if they are not. They can make great leaders.

So why is Sarah Palin, who has so many natural positives to her character insist, being involved some questionable situations?

This might not be the optimum astrological time for Palin to run for the White House. Right now, Neptune, which is retrograde, and also about to go forward along with square Mars (in early November 2008) is a very troubled planetary position that is causing a lot of disturbance in general. Sarah has Neptune square her natal sun, which causes big trouble. Normally, Palin would just rise effortlessly to the top, but right now luck is not on her side. When Neptune is afflicted, it means that the person becomes foggy, lost, and unable to connect with others. It actually causes the person to be viewed unfairly, as Neptune is a planet of distortion.

Like all famous people, Sarah Palin has a stellium in her astrological chart and this one just happens to be in that seventh house of her chart. She has both Saturn and Mars in the seventh house, which means that people will always be somewhat hostile in the way people perceive her. Saturn is a planet that symbolizes criticism and Mars is a warrior energy that can even be violent.

At the time of her Vice Presidential nomination, the planet Neptune was actually transiting over her natal Neptune, which would be a once in a lifetime happening since Neptune is such as slow planet. This planetary position simply translates to mean “I can’t win no matter what I do.That is also what might happen to Sarah Palin as she attempts to become Vice President of the United States. If Neptune were not crossing over the stallion of planets in her seventh house (which is the house of public opinion), she might not be the target of so much derision and be taken seriously in the press.

Even though she is a former beauty queen and seems soft on television, she has a moon in Capricorn, which makes her a fierce yet fair ruler. Unfortunately, with the planets not on her side, her political quest might not come to fruition. Perhaps the main reason she rose to political prominence in the first place is because she has Jupiter in the ninth house, which, for most of her career, had her in the right place at the right time.

We’ll find out on November 4th if the planets are in her favor in her quest with John McCain for the White House.
