Jacqueline London of Local 6 WKMG interviewed Parramore Kidz Zone youth and chaperone about their trip to Washington D.C. for President Obama’s inauguration. This story ran on Local 6 WKMG on January 19, 2009.
The City of Orlandos Parramore Kidz Zone youth, in partnership with District 39 Florida State Representative Geraldine Thompson, traveled to see President-Elect Barack Obamas inauguration in Washington D.C. on January 20, 2009. PKZ youth and chaperones traveled via bus to D.C. to attend pre-inaugural and Inauguration Day festivities. The buses departed from Jones High School on Sunday, January 18, 2009.
This opportunity for the children allowed them to witness a historic event in person. They saw President of the United States be sworn into office, and watched as he was honored with formal ceremonies, including a Presidential Swearing-in Ceremony, an Inaugural Address, and an Inaugural Parade. PKZ provided the students with food, lodging, transportation, and tickets to the events.
Modeled after the Harlem Childrens Zone, Parramore Kidz Zone employs creative outreach to engage a critical mass of Parramores children and linking them to positive opportunities, including pre-kindergarten education, parenting education, health care, mentoring, tutoring, and constructive activities when school is out. PKZ is part of the City of Orlando’s Families, Parks and Recreation Department.
