0 NBC News Decision 1980 Reagan WinsNBC news projects at about 8:15 PM that Ronald Reagan is elected President. The early NBC projections sparked controversies inside and outside the media. A mayor protested that it “effectively ended the races even before the polls in her area are closed.” A CBS commentator called it “small beer.” ABC was caught under pressure and Walter Cronkite was forced to explain to viewers what was happening. Also, this was the first time that exit polls were used by a network as the sole basis for projecting a winner for a state.

Later on, David Brinkley will call it a “suburban swimming pool,” while others call it “Lake Reagan.” And of course, NBC News team was more than happy to have that win as the earliest network to announce a winner at the time they are facing problems with Chancellor being defeated by Reynolds and Cronkite.

Also, America saw three generations of NBC anchormen. David Brinkley of Huntley-Brinkley Report fame, his successor (and sometimes co-anchor) John Chancellor, and in turn Chancellor’s successor Tom Brokaw (who was then announcing the Today show).

0 BREAKING NEWS President Barack Obama joins the Terrorist Tea Party iOwnTheWorld Mr PinkoBREAKING NEWS – Barack Obama joins the Terrorist Tea Party!
Maxine waters freaks out.
Frederica Wilson denounces the President – iOwnTheWorld.com – Mr. Pinko – BigFurHat
Freedomworks Taxpayer March on Washington D.C. 9 12 09 – September 12 2009.
The Taxpayer March on Washington (also known as the 9/12 Tea Party) was a Tea Party protest march from Freedom Plaza to the United States Capitol that was held on September 12, 2009, in Washington, D.C.[1][2] The event coincided with other similar protests organized in various cities across the nation.[3] The protesters rallied against what they consider big government, the dismantling of free market capitalism, abortion, and President Barack Obama’s proposals on health care reform, taxation, and federal spending, among other issues.[3][4][5][6][7][8]

Organizers of the event included the 9-12 Project, FreedomWorks, the National Taxpayers Union, The Heartland Institute, Americans for Tax Reform, Tea Party Patriots, and ResistNet. The event was also promoted by Fox News commentator Glenn Beck as a symbol of what he called “national unity” following the eight-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The march is the largest gathering of fiscal conservatives ever held in Washington, D.C., as well as the largest demonstration against President Obama’s administration to date.
Though many of the signs were close to the original Tea Party message of “Taxed Enough Already,” such as “Stop Obama’s Spending Spree,” some of the handwritten signs carried by protesters included statements such as “Liar Liar Pants on Fire!” and “Hey Obamacare! Hands off my body”. Other signs promoted Obama citizenship conspiracy theories, depicted the Obama “Joker” image, and compared Obama to Adolf Hitler. One protester commented that many signs were “expressing concerns about the tax burdens to be carried by “our grandchildren” and other signs he didn’t feel were appropriate to repeat”. Gene Healy, author and vice president at the libertarian Cato Institute, expressed the opinion that the signs generally focused on opposition to government bailouts, Obama’s proposal on health care reform, and the appointment of presidential “czars”.
Among the speakers at the rally were former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, chairman of FreedomWorks, and a small number of congressional Republicans including Representative Mike Pence, chairman of the House Republican Conference, Representative Tom Price of Georgia, Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, and Representative Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee. Pence said that “Americans want health care reform, but they don’t want government takeover”.

On February 17, 2009, Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a $787 billion economic stimulus package aimed at helping the economy recover from the deepening worldwide recession. The act includes increased federal spending for health care, infrastructure, education, various tax breaks and incentives, and direct assistance to individuals, which is being distributed over the course of several years.
President Barack Obama signs the ARRA into law on February 17, 2009 in Denver, Colorado. Vice President Joe Biden stands behind him.

In March, Obama’s Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, took further steps to manage the financial crisis, including introducing the Public-Private Investment Program for Legacy Assets, which contains provisions for buying up to $2 trillion in depreciated real estate assets.

Obama intervened in the troubled automotive industry in March 2009, renewing loans for General Motors and Chrysler to continue operations while reorganizing. Over the following months the White House set terms for both firms’ bankruptcies, including the sale of Chrysler to Italian automaker Fiat and a reorganization of GM giving the U.S. government a temporary 60% equity stake in the company, with the Canadian government shouldering a 12% stake. In June 2009, dissatisfied with the pace of economic stimulus, Obama called on his cabinet to accelerate the investment. He signed into law the Car Allowance Rebate System, known colloquially as “Cash for Clunkers”, that had mixed results.

The Congressional Budget Office and a broad range of economists credit Obama’s stimulus plan for economic growth. The CBO released a report stating that the stimulus bill increased employment by 1–2.1 million while conceding that “It is impossible to determine how many of the reported jobs would have existed in the absence of the stimulus package.”Although an April 2010 survey of members of the National Association for Business Economics showed an increase in job creation (over a similar January survey) for the first time in two years, 73% of the 68 respondents believed that the stimulus bill has had no impact on employment.

0 LBJ Inauguration: President Lyndon B. Johnson Sworn In (January 20, 1965) (Part 1)January 20, 1965 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0312060270?ie=UTF8&tag=doc06-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0312060270 Watch the full film: http://thefilmarchived.blogspot.com/2010/09/president-lyndon-b-johnson-inauguration.html

The second inauguration of Lyndon B. Johnson as the 36th President of the United States was held on January 20, 1965. The inauguration marked the commencement of the second term (and first full four-year term) of Lyndon B. Johnson as President and the only four-year term Hubert Humphrey as Vice President. Chief Justice Earl Warren administered the Oath of office, and Lady Bird Johnson founded the tradition of First Ladies participating in the ceremony by holding the President’s Bible. An estimated 1.2 million attended the inauguration, at the time the record holder for any event held at the National Mall until the Obama inauguration in 2009. This was the last time an inauguration was covered by newsreels.

Lyndon Baines Johnson (August 27, 1908 – January 22, 1973), often referred to as LBJ, served as the 36th President of the United States from 1963 to 1969 after his service as the 37th Vice President of the United States from 1961 to 1963. He served in all four federal elected offices of the United States: Representative, Senator, Vice President, and President.

Johnson served as a United States Representative from Texas, from 19371949 and as United States Senator from 19491961, including six years as United States Senate Majority Leader, two as Senate Minority Leader and two as Senate Majority Whip. After campaigning unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination in 1960, Johnson was asked by John F. Kennedy to be his running mate for the 1960 presidential election.

Johnson, a Democrat, succeeded to the presidency following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, completed Kennedy’s term and was elected President in his own right, winning by a large margin in the 1964 Presidential election. Johnson was greatly supported by the Democratic Party and, as President, was responsible for designing the “Great Society” legislation that included laws that upheld civil rights, Public Broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, environmental protection, aid to education, and his “War on Poverty.” He was renowned for his domineering personality and the “Johnson treatment,” his arm twisting of powerful politicians in order to advance legislation.

Simultaneously, he greatly escalated direct American involvement in the Vietnam War. As the war dragged on, Johnson’s popularity as President steadily declined. After the 1966 Congressional elections, his re-election bid in the 1968 United States presidential election collapsed as a result of turmoil within the Democratic Party related to opposition to the Vietnam War. He withdrew from the race amid growing opposition to his policy on the Vietnam War and a worse-than-expected showing in the New Hampshire primary.

Despite the failures of his foreign policy, Johnson is ranked favorably among some historians due to his domestic policies.

0 Kennedy vs. Nixon 1st 1960 DebateClip from the 1st 1960 presidential debate between Senator John F. Kennedy (D-MA) and Vice President Richard Nixon (R-CA). Held on September 26, 1960, it was the first presidential debate between candidates from opposing political parties as well as the first one to be televised. It is best known not by its subject matter, but by the preparedness and physical appearance of both candidates. Television audiences thought Kennedy won the debate by a landslide, while radio audiences thought Nixon won it by a landslide. Nixon appeared emaciated, unhealthy, and awkward, while Kennedy appeared handsome, tanned and confident. Nixon was recovering from an injured knee that resulted in a recent hospital stay. He had just arrived at the studio after a strenuous campaign in which he made appearances in all 50 states, including newly admitted Alaska and Hawaii. He refused to have makeup applied to his face, and had not shaved, making his stubble clearly visible to television viewers. Kennedy on the other hand, took time to rest before the debates and his suit contrasted well against the background. In effect, Nixon’s gray suit seemed to blend in with the background, especially on the era’s black and white television screens.

Closed captioned for the hearing impaired.
